I hadn’t planned on bothering to see this movie, and I don’t think I would have missed much. But I’ve been away for a week, and when my husband suggested a movie we could watch tonight (except Al, who would have found it upsetting and happily read books instead), I agreed.
I’m not sure what the purpose of this movie was except to make money off the POTC franchise and showcase Johnny Depp – for those who like him. The battle scenes no doubt are well done, for people who like watching battle scenes, but I find it hard to care much about the outcome of a battle when there’s little emotional connection to even the “good guys.”
I realize that the Lord Cutler Beckett is definitely the villain, caring nothing for loyalty to anyone but himself and in it (whatever it is) only for the money. But there’s not much to cheer for when a bunch of pirates band together to fight for “freedom” – freedom to be pirates. Will Turner is admirable in trying to rescue his father, but everyone else’s alliances (I can’t see allegiances) keep changing so quickly that it’s hard to settle on someone to root for.
I certainly hope that the one imdb.com comment I read is correct that there won’t be any budget for a POTC 4 to go find the Fountain of Youth. (Though I did find it amusing to be reminded that the treasure map points to the true home of Jack Sparrow, at Disney World.)

Even if there were a Pirates 4, I doubt I would bother to see it. Like most sequels, numbers 2 & 3 did not meet the high expectations after the first one.
